some things i forgot to mention

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Our song ‘antique limb’ is in the running for the jjj hottest 100. i’m not sure what happens if it makes it in, maybe we win a fancy car or something.

So you can go vote for it here, if you’re one of those people who votes for things.

Also, we made an EP that you can get on iTunes right here. Kinda forgot to tell anyone about this, y’know how it is.

It features our song ‘destroy the universe with jazz hands’ from the midnight believer album, plus a remix by our pal slo-mo speedboat, an 8-bit re-imagining of ‘antique limb’ by neutro & lone zero and a cover we did of leonard cohen’s ‘don’t go home with your hard on’.

Conversations with beef

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

We played at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney last night. It was okay. The security wouldn’t let people in so not many got to see us play. Best things about the night were Megastick Fanfare and Annehelena’s 20th birthday.

Today, we’re in Brisbane, getting ready to play at the Valley Fiesta tonight. We have spent most of the day freaking out in a mad hurry, toasting in the sun, designing posters and writing stuff and busting deadlines. A bit stressful. Preparing for our single launch next week, you see. Saturday - Halloween - night in Melbourne.

Anyway. There’s no daylight savings here. I’m typing on my phone. Very sleepy. Missing home. More later, I say.

Midnight Believer is out now. Finally! We were about to consider our options for a Caesarian.

To celebrate, Mess+Noise have gone fully ape poo about us for a limited time only. In addition to Presents…ing our tour, they’ve published a track-by-track guide to the album by Brain Cobra. And for today only, you can stream every single freakin’ song on the record right there on that page.

Also to celebrate, we’ve been busying ourselves with various other pursuits! Denim Owl has been sleeping over every Thursday night at the Edinburgh Castle in May, Wheeze has been playing with himself (haw haw haw hawwwww *snort*), I threw records and loops at Faux Pas (and vice versa) last night at Plug’n'Play, and Potential Falcon have been on tour promoting their new single (which they’ll finally launch in Melbourne tonight and Sunday). It’s kind of like the release of the album is a holiday from the work of actually making the album.

We’re also working hard at learning to play Mixylodian’s songs before he comes on tour with us. Actually, we’ve just been having breakfast with him and listening to his mp3s, and wondering how we’re going to master all the weedly-weedly and bloopy-buzzy.

Anyway - if you preorder Midnight Believer before Sunday, you can get a free double pass to our show at Triple R’s performance space on Monday night. Otherwise, listen to your radio or stream it from 6:30pm to hear us play live on Wig Wam Bam.

Tour news soon! Which reminds me… better buy some tickets. bites nails

Oh, whoa-whoa-whoa.

Midnight Believer is to be appearing on the shelf of your local Recordings Shoppe next week (!), and I still can’t find my copy (hid it from myself; too efficient), but RRR, SYN and FBi have been kindly in the sense that they’re renaming it Album Of The Week. In an attempt to convince them (weakly, for I do not feel strongly) that our title was better, I bring you a tribute to BB King:

You’re about to believe in cheese again
I’ll take your hair and bring you crack again
I’ll rhyme ‘again’ with ‘again’ - again
The duck is short
Mallards are long
Come go with me
Ignore the contradiction while the feeling is strong

Midnight believer
The neck believes in you
Midnight believer
The Czech receives the goo

I believe that the fish tells us lemonade
The moves to cake with the tea that we bring
You’ve got the cat locked up in rice
I’ve got the jalapeño so there’s nothing to ice cream

While I was recounting those timeless words, I wondered if BB King ever told anybody he was going to shoot them with his BB gun, and if so, whether it was sexy or threatening. Food for thought.

We will be playing live-to-air some time in the evening of June 1 2009 on Melbourne’s RRR. Also, we will be on TV in Melbourne on Thursday night. Chickpeas.

Midnight Believer

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Our new album is called Midnight Believer, and it will be released May 30 in Australia through Stomp.  Elsewhere - who knows?  Maybe you can help us.  Who knows?  You probably know… who knows?

Part of the reason we’re pleased with this result is that Lily Coates - quiet friend, illustrateuse -  has inked a package impressive in its detail and form. Fold out the CD cover and it becomes a wall-sized poster slathered with Lily’s felt-tip imaginings. It’s tres deluxe.

We’ll be heading around Australia in June to party with you, to patiently listen to your problems, and to sand the dry crusts of your weary heels. If you’re particularly lucksome, well, you haven’t much to worry about in this life, least of all any further luck bestowed upon you by the well-wishings of those who like you.

Brain Cobra has lodged his head inside of a computer, too, masterminding a Music Video of the song and single ‘Antique Limb’. See it on your MTVs and your Channel Vs this winter. We dance bad and shameful, like heavily sheltered Presbyterian children at their primary school fete.

Kindest regards,

Black Wasp!, who may or may not change his name (by deed poll; by the legitimate channels) to “Suckin’ on Chili Dog” by the time you next see him.

New things

Friday, March 27th, 2009

We have finished our album now - it’s just getting a little sketchy/clippy/shady treatment - and are going to hit the streets with our first single, ‘Antique Limb’: a split with Montréal’s Mixylodian, who will be touring Australia in a couple of months. Before then, though, we’ll be launching the single in Sydney on April 30 (Hopetoun), Brisbane on May 1 (Ric’s), and Melbourne on May 9 (Anytime Place warehouse). Yep!

It’s been a fairly involved process putting this album together, most of all for Brain Cobra, who has flexed new and sinewy parts of his brain especially for the task! It sounds very nice. We also crawled around in the dank scrub of the Merri Creek park the other night to take our new photos. The creek bore the strong aroma of poop. Charmed, I’m sure. Ah, the things we do to try to win your approval!

Sorry none of us really got around to writing about New Zealand. I suppose that’s the thing about globbing - it can seem a bit boring to sit at a computer and write about excellent times instead of traipsing around new places and having additional excellent times! And we certainly had many. My favourites were watching My Disco, The Ruby Suns, Love of Diagrams and a whole bunch of kiwi bands at Camp A Low Hum, seeing the epic otherworldiness of the South Island, the volcanic desert between Wellington and Auckland, and going on enormous walks through Wellington. Wunderbar in Lyttelton wins the award for best view (and possibly most charming bar I’ve ever been to?). Sly Hats stole my imagination and still hasn’t given it back. Matt Cox (of Pikelet) is a cool guy. Tarquin (also of Pikelet) loves the techno, he does.

It warms the heart to think of all the excellent people we met, especially Candy and Haneen. Oh - and thank you to Teacups for letting me ruin your songs with my drumming at Camp!

I think I’ll go back to sleep now. I hope you like the new fancy background!

ps. There are a couple of reviews of our single up on the internetwork already - see the links on our webshite!
